New European Bauhaus
The New European Bauhaus (NEB) is an ambitious European Commission initiative that envisions a sustainable, inclusive, and beautiful future. Inspired by the principles of the original Bauhaus movement, NEB aims to reimagine how we live by combining aesthetics, sustainability, and innovation across disciplines. Rooted in the European Green Deal, the NEB promotes environmentally friendly practices that benefit both society and the planet. It brings together science, technology, art, and culture to create spaces and products that are both functional and inspiring. Through collaboration, the NEB seeks to make sustainable lifestyles accessible, inviting everyone to participate in building a greener, more resilient Europe.
Vienna Textile Lab is dedicated to creating sustainable, biobased dyes that resonate with the New European Bauhaus (NEB) values of sustainability, beauty, and inclusivity. Our microbial dyes, which are fully circular and eco-friendly, provide an innovative, lower-impact alternative for textile production, perfectly aligning with NEB’s vision of integrating sustainable design with accessible solutions. In June 2022, our founder, Karin, was invited to participate in the NEB Festival in Brussels, where she took part in an inspiring panel discussion and attended the official inauguration ceremony, leaving a deep impression on our team. We were also honoured to participate in the NEB Catalyse Program and the WORTH Partnership Project, both of which support NEB’s mission by fostering creative collaborations across sustainable and forward-thinking European projects. Inspired by these experiences, Vienna Textile Lab proudly carries forward NEB’s principles of sustainable beauty in our colours and designs.
Beautiful: 1 – To activate
Explanation: Microbial Dyes and Pigments have a unique aesthetic, they blend effortlessly with each others and other natural colours. Every individual has preferences when it comes to design and a great part of design is implementing colour.
Sustainable: 2 – To close the loop
Explanation: We are implementing circular economy and reducing the overall waste in the process. Our colours have less impact on the environment than the synthetic colours.
Together: 1 – To include
Explanation: We are a women led company, with international staff and working for an industry that is dominated by female workers. We believe that our business and our product is supporting better working conditions in the sector.
Participatory process: 2 – To co-develop
Explanation: We have a track record of co-development, keeping our community in the loop, but also working together and aspiring joint product development in order to offer more products and services.
Multi-level engagement: 3 – To work globally
Explanation: We are addressing a global industry (fashion and textile), working with clients in 3 different continents and aiming to scale globally.
Transdisciplinary: 2 – To be interdisciplinary
Explanation: We work with creatives, designers, sustainability experts, innovation managers, bioengineers, chemists, dyers and textile engineers together. Our customers are ranging from designers, to textile mills, fashion brands, to chemical companies.
